Reno by Train: Make a Weekend of the Ride

Take the California Zephyr to Reno and plan a downtown weekend at Whitney Peak, with practical arrival, dining and return-trip advice.

You can come to Reno without bringing the car. Amtrak’s California Zephyr stops downtown, and Whitney Peak gives you a non-gaming, non-smoking place to stay beside the Reno Arch. Book two nights and you’ll have a full day in town between train rides, with time to settle in before heading home.

For a trip where the journey gets some attention, too, here’s how to put it together.

Start with the train

The California Zephyr runs daily from the San Francisco Bay Area through Reno, continuing east toward Chicago. Coming from Northern California, the Sierra crossing becomes part of the visit. Amtrak lists Donner Lake and the Truckee River among the route’s scenic highlights.

Search for Reno, NV, station code RNO, and check both directions before settling on hotel dates. Look through the complete itinerary, including any connections, rather than comparing departure times alone. Daylight and conditions will shape what you see along the way.

Keep arrival day lightly planned. A fixed dinner reservation or concert immediately after your scheduled arrival leaves little room for a delay. If a particular show is the reason for the trip, consider arriving the day before.

Know where you’re arriving

Reno’s station is at 280 University Way. Whitney Peak is at 255 North Virginia Street. Both are downtown; save the station and hotel locations before you leave, then choose your route according to your luggage, mobility needs and the weather.

The station has a detail worth knowing on your return: passengers enter at street level, while the waiting room and tracks are below. Give yourself time to find the boarding area instead of treating arrival at the street entrance as the finish line.

At the hotel, check-in begins at 3 p.m. Early check-in depends on availability, so don’t build an early arrival around a guaranteed room. Contact our front desk beforehand if the train’s timing raises questions.

Give yourself a full Reno day

After a day on the train, you may want dinner close to your room. Café Whitney is at the hotel; check its current menu and service hours as you make plans. Leave enough flexibility to adjust if your arrival changes.

The next morning is yours. Whitney Peak sits beside the Reno Arch, within walking distance of the Truckee Riverwalk District. Start with a walk when conditions suit, then give one outing the better part of the day. You don’t have to collect every downtown stop before lunch.

For the evening, look at what’s happening at Cargo Concert Hall, right at the hotel. A show on your second night gives you a day to explore first, without making the train’s arrival part of your concert timing. Check the individual event’s ticket and entry details before booking.

Keep any Tahoe excursion separate in your planning. Arriving in downtown Reno doesn’t arrange the onward transportation; work that out before committing to an activity outside town.

Leave time for the ride home

Hotel checkout is 11 a.m. Compare that with your return departure, and ask the front desk about any gap rather than assuming a late checkout.

Before leaving for the station, check your train’s status. Follow Amtrak’s arrival guidance, allowing extra time for baggage or assistance. A nearby hotel is convenient, but boarding still deserves its own space in the morning.

Explore our rooms, match your dates with the train, and book your Whitney Peak stay. Bring a book for the ride. Leave a day for Reno.
