The Fab 5: Our Favorite Microbreweries in Reno

May 19, 2020

If you’re a beer connoisseur and find yourself in the Biggest Little City, consider yourself lucky. You are truly in for a treat because Reno’s microbrewery scene is growing faster than ever. We have recently become a West Coast hub for hops with dozens of new joints crafting the next finest IPA or aged spirit. With so many worthy microbreweries in the area, it was hard to hone in on The Fab 5, so if you truly have an unquenchable thirst we challenge you to continue your exploration and make this list “The Tasty 10”. What are you waiting for? Let your crafted journey begin. Cheers!

Lead Dog Brewery

We’re kicking this list off with one of the newest breweries to hit Reno, owned by the youngest brewer-operator in the country! But hey, don’t be quick to judge because this 24 year-old sure does know what he’s doing. But don’t take our word for it, check it out for yourself and enjoy a nice Lead Dog classic Strawberry Blonde or Chocolate Peanut Butter Stout while sitting on the outdoor patio or playing games with a buddy in the game room.

The Depot

Next up is a brewery that’s just a short walking distance from Lead Dog! Perfect, right? This downtown brewery is a staple on every Reno local’s summer hotspot list. Maybe it’s due to the Cornhole and Giant Jenga setup on the patio, or their award winning Viking Blonde (personal favorite), and tasty brunch options. Either way, this three-story brick brewery and distillery was a no brainer for the Fab 5 list and is a “must visit” no matter what the season.

10 Torr

This exceptional vacuum distillery and brewery may be less than 2 years old but the second you walk through those large steel doors into the brick masonry taproom with maple wood floors and modern design, you will feel as though you've been there for years. The building was originally a1940s convenient store, which has now been transformed into a beautifully crafted brewery, while staying true to their old Reno roots.

Brewers Cabinet

In the heart of Midtown, Brewers Cabinet certainly excels at pairing exceptional beer with laid back vibes and an atmosphere centered around good times.  If you happen to pop in on a Wednesday, you're in luck because they serve up delicious $1.50 street tacos that might just be the best street tacos in the city.

Great Basin Brewery

Last but not least, this list wouldn’t be complete without the brewery that started it all. Great Basin is Nevada’s oldest brewery and a pioneer for craft culture in the area. When you visit one of their two locations be sure to ask for an “Icky”. Don’t be fooled by the name because this legendary IPA will leave you wanting more!
